Dan's TEAM in Training
Marathon Update Page!

Hey thanks for stopping by and checking in on my progress. The training is going great...lot's miles done and lot's more to go! It has all been very fun and I've been really inspired by the stories of our honored patients, the committment of the other runners in our TEAM in Training group, and especially the support and encouragement I've received from friends and family all over the world.

Here are some details about the two races I'll be running...

We did it! Last night our "Mommie Dearest" event at the Joyo Theatre brought in over $1000! That has pushed my fundraising total to $3,345!!! Wow!

I want to take a moment to thank all my friends who helped organize and promote this event. I don't really have the words to describe what it feels like to have so many people get behind a personal goal like this. I feel very blessed to have so much support.

And we had a GREAT time doing it! The movie was so fun to watch in this environment. It was basically like having a big party (BYOB!) and then watching the campiest movie ever. The audience was hilarious and it felt a little like being at the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I'll post some pictures when I get them.

70% - This afternoon my total in donations moved up to $2249! My podcasting friends have really stepped up this week and made a huge impact in this effort! I'm really humbled to know that so many people would lend their support like this.

The runs, even the long ones, are starting to get a lot easier. My iPod+NIKE has been making me more aware of my pace...and my need to pick it up. A big part of marathon running is distance (duh!), so you need to pace yourself so that you can have enough oomph to carry you through the 26.2 miles. However, TIME is also an important consideration. Running for 5 hours is a lot more work than running 4. An additional 60 minutes of wear and tear can make a difference in recovering from the first run (Chicago) and being ready for the second (Washington DC). So, I'm trying to pick up the pace a bit. I'm aiming for a time that is close to 4 hours in Chicago(side note: my all time personal best is 4 hours and 4 minutes).

Becoming the bionic man!Nike Shoes

I've been running with an iPod for the past few years and its really helped distract me on long long runs and motivate me with good tunes. Recently Apple and Nike came out with a new little piece of technology that lets your shoes talk to your ipod. :) I went out and got one this week and it is amazing! My shoes talk to my ipod and tell it my pace per mile, how far i've run, how far i still have to go, and how many calories i've burned. This nice voice pops in every once in a while and tells me how I'm doing. It's crazy cool. It's really motivating to know how you are performing at any given moment. I've become a data junky!

Thanks to everyone who donated this week! We're over the 50% mark! Tickets are selling like hotcakes for our Mommie Dearest fundraiser...so we should get a good crowd.

Oh...and I'm officially down 12 lbs. Woo hoo!

The heat has broken!! Finally a really cool morning. My morning run was really great today. There was a little fog and it was actually cooler outside of my house than inside. I'm sure I'll be wishing for some of this warmth later in the fall, but for now I'll happily take 60-70 degrees.

Plans for our "Mommie Dearest" event are coming along great too! My friend Ross put together a great poster (feel free to download it and hang one up!) for the event and I'm sending out packets of tickets to some of my friends to help us build a crowd. If you are interested in attending (its Sept 8th in Lincoln), let me know.

I finished a great 10miler today despite the heat and humidity (even at 6am!). I took a new route that went by the state capital and downtown. My fundraising hit $1398 this week. I'm about 44% of the way to my goal. Lot's more work to do. A group of my friends is helping to plan a benefit event to help raise more money. We're doing a screening of "Mommie Dearest" at the Joyo theatre here in town. It should be hilarious and lots of fun. Check back for more details soon.
